Designed to protect the head and neck, HANS Devices have become some of the most important pieces of racing equipment around. Developed to work as part of a rigid or adjustable system, HANS Devices help to reduce the risk of serious injuries brought about as a result of high speed collisions out on the circuit. In many forms of motorsport, and all single seater racing cars in the UK, HANS devices are compulsory and drivers will not be allowed to participate in the event without one. Also known as frontal head restraints, these safety systems fix onto the helmet of the driver and rest on and across the shoulders and pectoral muscles for all-round support inside the vehicle. This method of construction means that the HANS device is tailored to fit the driver and his/her driving position, reducing the movement of the head and neck throughout the impact of the accident and thereby reducing the risk of serious injury.
