Fidanza Lightweight Aluminium Flywheel With Replaceable Friction Plate
A Fidanza Lightweight Aluminium Flywheel will improve the keenness of your engine and make for easier shifting, particularly on sporty downshifts.
- Keener, revvier engine
- Easier throttle blips for downshifts
- Rigid, lightweight aluminium
The flywheel between the engine and the gearbox. Its purpose is to smooth out the rotation of the engine and keep the engine spinning evenly. As with so many parts of a car, the flywheel supplied from the factory is not designed with performance driving in mind. Factory flywheels tend to be quite heavy, designed for smoothness and fuel economy above all else.
The weight of the flywheel will slow down the engine revving up, and mean that the revs "hang" a bit. If you're trying to quickly downshift, this means you will have to blip the throttle for longer to get the lower gear in. If you're upshifting, it can mean the revs don't fall as quickly as you like.
A lighter Fidanza flywheel will give the drivetrain a much keener, more rev-happy feel. This is sure to put a smile on your face every time you push the accelerator pedal. A lighter, more responsive engine will rev up and down quicker, allowing quicker shifts and putting you more in control. This is particularly useful as you blip the throttle for downshifts.
You don't want to take too much weight out of the flywheel on a road car though, because with too little weight you will struggle with things like hill starts where you want a bit of mass in the driveline to stop the engine stalling. Fidanza aim for a sweet spot of 40-60% lighter than stock. This is ideal for fast-road driving. Light enough to enhance driveability, but not too light for the things you need your daily driver to be able to do.
On many modern vehicles, the factory flywheel will also be dual-mass - this where the flywheel is split in two and the two halves have springs or bushes between them to damp the loads from the engine. While this does increase smoothness, the springs or bushes do wear and the increased power of a tuned engine will cause them to wear out sooner.
Replacing this dual-mass component with a solid flywheel takes a potential failure point out of the equation, and is definitely a worthwhile upgrade if you're increasing the torque of your engine or fitting a harsher clutch compound.
Fidanza Lightweight Aluminium Flywheels come with a replaceable friction surface, so as the flywheel wears you can replace this surface instead of having to machine the flywheel.
The main mass of the flywheel is made from billet T6 6061 or T4 2024 aluminium. These are high-performance alloys, rigid and resistant to heat. Billet machining is where the part being machined starts as a single block. This means it's literally a solid chunk of metal, with no weak points. The ring gear is also replaceable and is made from hardened, high carbon 1050 steel - very long-lasting. Fasteners are military spec, high-tensile steel. These are all rugged, high-quality materials.
