Coolant, as the name suggests, is designed to help keep engine parts operating a comfortable temperature by passing water around the system and cooling each of the hot surfaces. The problem, is however, that water-based coolants turn to steam and that means it can no longer work to cool the engine, resulting in significant damage to the engine.
