Camshafts and camshaft kits are fundamental components in performance vehicles, playing a crucial role in controlling the timing and duration of the engine’s valve operations. The camshaft is a rotating shaft with lobes that push against the valves or lifters, opening and closing the intake and exhaust valves at precise intervals. In performance applications, camshafts are designed with specific profiles that offer increased lift and duration, allowing for greater airflow into the combustion chamber, which enhances engine power and torque.

Technically, performance camshafts are manufactured from high-strength materials such as billet steel or chilled cast iron to withstand the increased stresses of high-performance engines. The lobes on these camshafts are ground to precise specifications, often using computer-controlled machinery to ensure accuracy and consistency. The profile of the cam lobes—specifically the lift (how far the valve opens) and duration (how long the valve stays open)—is tailored to the performance characteristics desired, whether for increased horsepower at high RPMs or improved torque at lower RPMs.

Camshaft kits typically include additional components necessary for optimal performance and durability, such as upgraded valve springs, retainers, and lifters. These components are designed to handle the increased loads and higher RPMs associated with performance camshafts. Valve springs, for example, must be strong enough to close the valves quickly and prevent valve float at high engine speeds. Lifters and retainers are often made from lightweight, durable materials to reduce inertia and wear. Together, camshafts and camshaft kits significantly enhance the breathing capability of an engine, leading to improved overall performance in high-stress, high-speed driving conditions.
