Pushing an engine really hard does bring some of its own problems with cooling. If you get oil hot enough, it starts to lose its lubricating properties which can add significant wear to an engine.

A popular cooling upgrade for cars getting worked very hard is a separate oil cooler.

This works a lot like a radiator, passing the oil through its own cooling core on its way back to the engine.

This can yield significant reductions in oil temperature with drops of up to 34 degrees C possible on some kits. Reductions will vary according to the design of the original cooling arrangements, if any..

This is beneficial in its own right but also has the added benefit of reducing the load the rest of the cooling system is under.

Oil Coolers labelled as “Thermostatic” have a thermostat included. This keeps the external cooler closed till oil reaches a certain temperature, preventing overcooling of oil – oil also doesn’t lubricate properly below a certain temperature. We’d recommend a cooler with this feature for cars being driven on road. This will ensure your cooling arrangement is appropriate to the usage the engine is under.
