For cars that aren't under heavy load all the time, an oil cooler can be a mixed blessing.

Engine oil, like porridge, needs to be not too hot but it also needs to be not too cold. You need the oil to reach a certain minimum operating temperature for it to be protecting your engine fully.

The ideal solution is to add a thermostat into the system, so oil is only passed through the additional cooler when it reaches a particular temperature keeping it cool, but not too cool.

These Thermostatic Oil Cooler Kits from Mishimoto come with a thermostat, as well as a fitting kit.

The fitting kit normally includes two stainless braided hoses with appropriate fittings, a sandwich plate, -10AN fittings, Dowty Oil Seals, a large O-Ring, 1/8th NPT Allen Key Plugs and sandwich plate adaptors.
